Dr. David Masondo

Dr. David Masondo is a seasoned South African policymaker and public servant who currently serves as the Deputy Minister of Finance, a position he has held since May 2019 following his reappointment in June 2024. Over a political career spanning roughly 30 years, he has occupied key managerial and governmental roles, including serving as the MEC for Finance and Director in the Local Government Department in Limpopo. Additionally, he held senior executive roles in Gauteng, serving as the Chief Director for Economic Sectors and Industry and CEO of the Automotive Industry Development Centre. Within the ruling African National Congress (ANC), he serves as a National Executive Committee member active in the Economic Transformation Committee, and has represented the community on the Financial Sector Charter Council.
Alongside his public service, Dr. Masondo holds a distinguished academic background and a deep commitment to education and development. He earned his BA (Hons) and MA from Wits University—where he later lectured on political economy and states and markets—before completing his PhD at New York University, focusing on post-apartheid industrial policy and investment in the South African automotive industry. Channeling his passion for capacity building, he became the Founding Principal of the ANC’s OR Tambo School of Leadership and established the Topisa Trust, a community organization dedicated to supporting youth education, sports, and cultural excellence in rural Limpopo villages.
